Covered California

Are you looking for information about purchasing a health insurance plan through the Covered California health insurance marketplace? Picking the right policy can be a nerve wracking task, but at ForHealthInsurance.com we are here to help you. Read on to learn more about Covered California’s health insurance plans, and how the Affordable Care Act impacts The Golden State.

Get ready to be Covered

The first step on your California health insurance journey is to start with a pen and paper. Taking some time to brainstorm and assess your needs will be helpful later when comparing California health insurance plans. Walk through some basic questions to get an understanding of exactly what you need in a California health insurance plan, what would be nice to have, and what you don’t need.

Start with the basics: “Who is going to be covered by this plan?”, “What’s my California health insurance budget?”, “How many times a year do I need to visit the doctor?”, “Do I or my dependents have any special health conditions that need to be covered by the plan?”, “Is there a certain doctor I want?, etc.

What’s covered by Covered California?

All California health insurance plans sold through Covered California are required to meet the rigorous new standards of the ACA. This means that every California health insurance plan, even the less expensive ones, provide coverage for medical services in all 10 of the ACA’s Essential Health Benefits categories. These benefits include everything from emergency services, to prescription drug coverage.

Of course some California health insurance plans at Covered California plans offer a richer selection of benefits than others, but at the very least you can feel confident that no matter what plan you pick, the essentials are covered.

How much will the plans cost?

Many factors influence how much you’ll actually pay for a policy at Covered California. The primary one though will be your annual income, which determines your eligibility for a federal health insurance subsidy.

Being eligible for the subsidy for California health insurance means that your income falls between 133 percent and 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Line. Within that range individuals’ health insurance contributions are capped at a maximum of 9.5 percent of their income. You’ll pay less if you make less on down the line until you reach 133 percent FPL, which at that point would qualify you for Medicaid.

Picking your plan

Covered California breaks up the health plans it offers into four different categories, Bronze Gold, Silver, and Platinum, based on each plan’s ratio of monthly premium to out of pocket costs.  At each level starting with Bronze the monthly premium paid goes up as out of pocket costs go down. So for example if you plan on visiting the doctor very often you might choose a plan with a higher monthly premium so that you don’t have an expensive copay and/or high deductible for medical care that you’re going to use a lot of.
